SpotCrime Maps Local Illegal Happenings [Crime]
Crime-mapping mashup SpotCrime pulls data from city police records and news sources and plots it in an easy-to-snoop fashion. Choose a city, a time frame, and the types of offenses you want to see, and you can mouse over the pinned icons to see thumbnail descriptions, or click an item for a full read. The site claims that humans are working in the background to make sense of the data, and that incidents show up anywhere from 3-24 hours after they're reported. A good tool for checking out a potential neighborhood for moving or exploring, or just keeping up on what's going down across town.

How to Turn $450 a Month into $1 Million
If you started investing $448 a month at 30 years old, Yahoo Finance says that a reasonable 8% return would put your savings over the million dollar mark in 35 years. The problem, of course, is finding that extra $450. To help ferret out every quarter in your couch cushions, the article suggests seven different potential expenses that, with slight adjustments, could easily produce the extra cash you need to start down the road to a million. For example:
Save $28 Per Month on Health Care: The typical family spends $1,321 on out-of-pocket health expenses each year, says the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. You can pay those costs with a flexible spending account, which lets you set aside pretax dollars.
By cutting $100 a month on food by brown-bagging it, $80 a month on entertainment by skipping one night out a month, and skimping on a few other expenses, the article makes a total of $451 materialize from thin air. Let's hear what cuts you make to ensure you're hitting your monthly savings marks—whether or not you plan on hitting a million—in the comments.

Here’s a capture from Google Maps Street View showing what appears to be a couple of hookers touting for business on the corner of San Pablo Ave & 32nd St, Emeryville, CA.
I guess they could just be hanging out but that’s not the feeling I’m getting when I look at it.

Legally Blind Man Bowls Perfect Game
Legally Blind Man Bowls Perfect Game
ALTA, Iowa—A 78-year-old legally blind man nicknamed “The Hammer” has bowled a perfect game. Dale Davis of Alta, Iowa, nailed 12 consecutive strikes and reached 300 on Saturday night during league play.
Century Lanes owner Clem Ledoux said Davis’ game didn’t draw much attention until he reached 10 strikes. That’s when folks poured out of the bar to watch his final two shots.Davis, who stands 5-foot-8 and just 115 pounds, threw a “Brooklyn,” where a right-hander strikes the left side of the head pin, for his final strike. The feat brought wild cheers from Davis’ fellow bowlers and onlookers.
I’m happy for “The Hammer” and everything, but aren’t we all “legally blind” when we go bowling after 12 beers. This guy still has vision in his right eye, and I bet you anything it’s better than mine when I’m shitcanned.
Props to the AP for picking up this story. You know you have a winner when you can write about two guys named “The Hammer” and Clem in the same story.
